Real Estate in Whistler is some of the most expensive in the entire country. The announcement of the 2010 Olympics only sent prices higher. Currently homes in the Whistler area are priced over $1.5 million on average and condos are about $600,000 on average. With the coming of the games the issue will be 'where are all the workers are going to live?'  Whistler is about a two hour drive from Vancouver, making it the outdoor playground for the lower mainland of British Columbia. With the expansion of the highway to Whistler people from other parts of Canada, such as oil rich Edmonton and Calgary, will have easy access to the resort, sending demand and prices even higher.

Whistler was established in the 1860’s when the British Royal Navy began to survey the area.  The surveyors called the area London Mountain, but the name ‘Whistler’ came to be used after hearing the call of the indigenous Hoary Marmot.  Lil’wat First Nations People were in the area when Europeans arrived and used the Whistler area as part of their trading route.  In 1962, four Vancouver businessmen began to explore the area with the intent of building a ski resort and bidding for the 1968 Winter Olympics.  Garibaldi Lift Company was formed, shares were sold, and in 1966, Whistler Mountain opened to the public.  Of course we now know the area as the Whistler-Blackcolm Ski Resort.  Another popular outdoor venue near Whistler is Garibaldi Provincial Park.
