Real Estate in Montreal is not on the affordable end of the spectrum. Remember that Montreal is over 350 years old as a city, and real estate has been important since the beginnings of settlement. Real estate in the downtown core is very pricey, whether it be an apartment, townhouse or detached home. A detached home in upscale neighbourhoods such as Mont-Royal, Outremont and Westmount will cost a minimum of $500,000. Looking for housing in one of the World’s greatest cities should never be an easy task.

The population of the city of Montreal is about 1.65 million people, but the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) is about 3.65 million people, nearly half the population of Quebec. The CMA includes communities such as: Laval, Dollard-Des Ormeaux, Longueuil, Dorval, Chateauguay, Kirkland, Montreal-Est, and Montreal-Ouest.

Up until the 1970’s Montreal had been the largest city in Canada, and as such was a centre for cultural, political, and economic power. Today the city stands as a centre for high-tech and research companies, as well as being a major manufacturing and shipping hub. Some major companies and international organizations operating in the Greater Montreal Region are: Canadian Pacific Railway, Canadian National Railway, Canadian Space Agency, International Civil Aviation Organization, World Anti-Doping Agency, International Air Transport Association, Air Canada, Alcan, Bombardier, National Bank of Canada, Bell Canada, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Alouettes, Via Rail, and others.

Montreal is a Mecca for post secondary institutions. The city and surrounding area lends itself to the agglomeration of learning. Some major universities and colleges are: University of Montreal, University of Quebec, University of Sherbrooke, Laval University, Concordia University, and McGill University. Servicing a city on Montreal’s magnificence is two international airports: Montreal-Trudeau International Airport, and Plattsburgh International Airport one hour away in New York State. Montreal is home to the world renown Cirque du Sole and was the site of the 1976 Olympic Summer Games.

Montreal is about 5 and a half hours, or 545 kilometres from Toronto, about 11 hours, or 843 kilometres from Quebec city, about 50 minutes, or 68 kilometres to Champlain, NY, on the Canada-New York State border, about 2 hours, or 200 kilometres from Ottawa and about 6 hours, or 604 kilometres from New York City.
