Real Estate in Halifax is very affordable when compared to other large centres in Canada. Halifax is nearly 260 years old as a community, and some very old buildings are available. The Halifax region still has homes available near the $100,000 mark, but they are old buildings away from the city centre. Homes with views of the ocean generally start at the $200,000 point. Most people still refer to the area as Halifax, although it is technically incorrect. About 375,000 people live in Halifax, over one third of the entire population of Nova Scotia. Halifax depends of the Department of National Defence and the Port of Halifax as major employers in the local economy. Other important industries include agriculture, fishing, mining and forestry. Post secondary institutions also play a large role in the economy, and Halifax is home to several colleges and universities including: Dalhousie University, Saint Mary’s University, University of King’s College, Atlantic School of Theology, NSCAD University, and Nova Scotia Community College. Halifax is also home to Halifax Stanfield International Airport, The Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL, and the 2011 Canada Winter Games. Halifax is one of the oldest cities in Canada and is rich in culture and diversity, making the city and area a stable, but not booming, real estate environment.
