Abbotsford is part of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB). Real Estate in Abbotsford in recent years has shot up in price with the rest of the Fraser Valley. The city of Abbotsford did not come into existence until the merging of the District of Matsqui and the District of Abbotsford in 1995. The newly incorporated city took its name from the village of the same name incorporated in 1892, and named after a man named Harry Abbot. Abbotsford is located in the fertile Fraser Valley, and agriculture is the main economic activity of the area. Other industries include a fledgling aviation industry, led by Conair, manufacturing and retail. The University College of the Fraser Valley was founded in Abbotsford in 1974, and the main campus is located there. The Abbotsford International AirShow is held every August at YXX. Abbotsford has a sister city in Japan called Fukagawa.
